At Calgary Alternative Permanent Supportive Housing we provide affordable, safe housing for individual experiencing mental health and/or addiction issues. Our goals include creating a restorative environment within which individuals can attain or regain their self-esteem, confidence and other skills necessary to lead productive and socially satisfying lives. We ensure the maintenance of safe housing, support the individual to connect or reconnect with community resources and to establish positive connections and friendships.
The Overnight Direct Service Support Worker position provides support to persons living with complex mental health and addictions issues and will require an understanding of the Harm Reduction and Person-Centered Models of Service.
Key knowledge and responsibilities include:
Possess an understand of challenges related to addiction and homelessness issues
Providing intervention, support and recreational services for tenants as required
Providing support counseling and collaboration on individual goal plans, crisis intervention
Establish yourself as an available, approachable resource for tenants and staff
Encourage/facilitate skill building in tenants’ communications and relationship building skills
Knowledge of appropriate Calgary resources and referrals
Advocate and support individuals with other agencies and referrals
Provide landlord and tenant support including intervention or problem solving as needed
Ensure only tenants and supervised guests are in the building
Complete a “Walk Around” on a random schedule to ensure outside doors are locked/secured on hallway/stair and remove any obstructions or hazards.
Observe client activity in the building
Maintain daily activity records
Complete data entry as required
Perform some light janitorial duties
Addictions Studies Diploma, Social Work Diploma, a degree in Social Sciences or equivalent
First Aid Certification
Crisis Prevention Intervention Training
Motivational Interview Training
Police Information Check including Vulnerable Sector Check
Additional training may be required, but will be provided with the support of CASS.
Experience supporting individuals with mental health and addictions issues.
