Calgary Alternative Support Services (CASS) is a Not-For-Profit Human Service Agency that was founded in 1988 in order to support people with disabilities to live, work, and contribute to their communities. The work of CASS is a combination of advocacy, community development, and service to the people of Calgary.

We are currently seeking a Payroll Specialist/Accounts Payable Clerk. This individual is accountable for the monthly payroll cycle of approximately 300 employees, including collecting timekeeping information, incorporating various deductions, and issuing pay and pay-related information to employees. The Payroll Specialist also plays a key role in supporting supervisory staff with their payroll requirements. This payroll professional will demonstrate excellent customer service, professionalism, and a high degree of confidentiality.

The schedule for this position will be Monday to Friday, 09:00 – 15:00; due to payroll and accounting needs, some flexibility is required.

Key knowledge and responsibilities include:

Payroll

  • Completing the monthly payroll cycle for approximately 300 staff
  • Verifying attendance and hours worked and inputting pay, vacation, lieu, and sick time adjustments
  • Processing paperwork for new employees and entering employee information into the payroll system
  • Verifying monthly payroll with the Internal Auditor
  • Issuing Records of Employment and processing levies and garnishments as required
  • Putting through retroactive payments for employees as needed
  • Addressing inquiries from supervisory and other staff regarding payroll
  • Conducting year-end balancing and filings as required

Accounts Payable Clerk

  • Full cycle Accounts Payable
  • Processing staff expenses claims
  • Responsible for the application of general payment receipts ( cheques, EFTs)

In addition to the above-listed responsibilities, the ideal applicant will be able to protect personal and confidential information that may arise while performing their job. Ensure organized, accurate, and detailed verbal and written communications. Work both independently and as a member of a team. Prioritize tasks and meet deadlines under pressure. Liaise with various external stakeholders regarding payroll, such as the Canada Revenue Agency, Ceridian, etc. Input large amounts of numerical and informational data into record management tools.

Required Education:

Post-secondary education and/or enrolled in CPA/PCP payroll certification courses or designation

CASS also requires of every employee:

  • A Police Information Check with a Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Completion of a “Statement of Confidentiality”
  • Completion of a “Confirmation of Understanding of the CASS Policy & Procedures”

Experience:

A minimum of 2 years payroll processing experience, preferably with Ceridian Insync. Proficiency with computers and experience with Microsoft Office applications. Familiarity with relevant government legislation, including but not limited to Employment.

Standards, FOIPP, CRA, and Service Canada as they relate to employment requirements. Knowledge in the application of payroll best practices and applicable provincial and federal legislation.

Knowledge and experience with Sparkrock 365, Dayforce – Ceridian systems and implementation skills would be an asset.
